7th Grade Drum Audition Form

The audition took five minutes. This is what I did:

  1. Piano Proviciency
I listened to them play part of their prepared piece.
    Score: no skill = 1, amazing skills = 5
  2. Note Recognition
I pointed to treble and bass clef notes and asked them to name the notes.
    Score: no skill = 1, amazing skills = 5
  3. Boom-Chuck Drill
I had them tap their foot on the beat and clap their hands on the off-beat at the tempo markings indicated. The faster they could do it, the higher their score was.
    Score: 60 = 1, 144 = 5
  4. Drumstick Control
I asked them to do a single-stroke roll on a drum pad as fast and as evenly as possible.
    Score: no skills = 1, amazing skills = 5
  5. Echo Drill
I clapped rhythm patterns from simple to complex and asked them to echo me.
    Score: no skills = 1, amazing skills = 5

Video Disclaimer

The attached videos are not perfect examples of how each tune should be played. They are recordings of junior high students, some of whom have had their instruments for only a few months. Also, they are not professional recordings. They were taken by band parents using home equipment and naturally focusing on their own children.

I include them for two reasons: (1) To give you an idea of what the arrangements are like, and (2) To illustrate the kind of performance you can expect from your junior high students.
